Portraits

My portrait work has recently converged with my cartographic practice. Heritage maps become skin. Aerial topography becomes bone structure. When I paint a portrait, I am not capturing likeness. I am mapping where someone has been.

I draw right-side-up first to capture the story behind the eyes, then flip the canvas upside down for the underpainting, breaking the face into abstract shapes that echo the fragmented geography of diaspora.
