Madeline is Medusa. The serpents are in there, coiled through the green, if you know to look. The face belongs to a gothic rock voice a whole generation grew up on. If you know, you know.

She is part of my Pop Art series, running since 2009 and built on Warhol's dare: take an image the whole world already knows and rebuild it around someone it was never meant to hold. We treat musicians like religious icons. We light candles at their concerts, make pilgrimages to their shows, print their faces like saints. But they were never saints. They are mythical creatures: sirens, gorgons, stories we tell about voices too big to be human.

Vibrant greens push into golden yellows, layer over layer, colour moving the way memory moves: in waves, without permission.

About the artist
