Acrylic on canvas with painted figure, informed by aerial photograph personally captured at 30,000 feet en route to exhibit in the UAE.
A woman emerges from the surface like an oracle, a seer, surrounded by painterly waves of light teals, blues, and lagoon tones beneath a vibrant sky.
Painted after an evening spent among fellow Art Ambassadors in Dubai, the rare experience of being surrounded by people who understand what it means to carry your culture into every room.
Line work embeds the topographic mapping of desert terrain, tracing a route my family once fled, now travelled by choice. Part of Maps to Milk: Contemporary Cartography of the Diaspora.
What Makes This Unique:
This painting holds real GPS coordinates and aerial photography of Dubai embedded beneath the surface. The figure in the work is an oracle, someone who holds knowledge the rest of us are still catching up to. Dubai sits at a crossroads for so many diaspora stories, including mine. It's the stopover, the transit point, the place between the country you left and the country you're building.
